The Wiki Issue
I just wanted to drop a general note about the idea of an open game content wiki/central storage site. I'm really busy at work, and also actively carving more free time from my schedule. I also think this idea requires a lot of thought to do it right. So, I'm reading comments, thinking, planning, and putting together some ideas. Don't expect any rapid, sudden moves out of me, but planning is taking place.

While I think this would be an incredible resource, I'm not quite sure your average gamer is quite to that point where he trusts online gaming content as much as published material. I, however, would love it. :D

You have my vote.

I think the timing is right for a project like this.

I second the honorable member's motion.

It sounds to me like the first and most important thing that this project needs is a staff of people with more free time unto which you would be able to delegate responsibilities.

Perhaps, to start, a list of people interested in helping out and an estimate of how much time per week that they'd have available and be willing to put forward in the immediate future?

I am totally supportive of something like this. I myself have been toying with the idea of an rpg with a wiki tied in somehow.

Alright, I've gone ahead and set up a wiki at the following address:

http://ogl.jonnydigital.com/wiki/Main_Page

It runs on the latest version of the same software that Wikipedia uses. I even managed to get rid of the unnecessary "index.php/" in the URL, like Wikipedia does. (It was tricky to set up.)

It's looking pretty bare right now, but that'll chance once the project gets organized and begins. I think submission and editing guidelines need to be made before content can be added.

Nice job on the install. It reminds me quite a bit of the shortlived RPGEngine Wiki, which also used MediaWiki -- emphasis on the "Short-lived."

I think submission and editing guidelines need to be made before content can be added.

If you don't mind, why don't we go ahead and start discussing those there?

Presuming you're all right with this, I'd suggest disallowing anonymous contributions right off the bat--or, if not outright disallowing them, limiting them to the discussion areas.

At the very least, it's a good idea to request that all users create an account.

I'm all for it - however, apparently the discussion of the whole Idea on ENWorld got so heated that the thread was closed...

I'm setting up some sample content in the wiki to get a feel for how it'll be added. Current guidelines are not to add Open Gaming Content from a source that's on sale, unless you have permission. The sample things I've added are either from free sources or those where the author has given his permission.

The general Wikipedia convention in naming entries and titles is to capitalize only the first word and not the rest - for example, "Druid spells", not "Druid Spells". I'm going with this in general. With spells I'm also going with this, because spell names are generally written in lowercase (and italic, but we can't have italic entry names). With magic items, I'm breaking this convention and capitalizing all words, for example, "Amulet of the Planes", "Helm of Opposite Alignment". Let me know if you agree with this capitalization method on spells and magic items, or think one or both should be changed.
